What Was Your Favorite Toy Growing Up? (Mine Was Forts!)

Do you remember your favorite toy as a kid?

Maybe it was something that lit up or made noise. Maybe it came in a shiny box, or maybe — just maybe — it was something as simple as a blanket over the dining room table.

For a lot of us, forts were it. That combination of a few couch cushions, some kitchen chairs, and whatever blankets we could sneak from the linen closet created something magical. A space that was entirely ours.

The Fort Was Different

You didn’t just play with a fort. You played in it. You built it. You defended it. You held top-secret meetings inside it. You read by flashlight, ate snacks you definitely weren’t supposed to have, and maybe cried a little when a parent made you take it down.

There was something special about having a space that was designed entirely by you, for you. No instructions. No rules. Just your imagination and whatever you had around the house.

Why It Mattered (More Than We Realized)

Looking back, fort-building was secretly incredible for our development:

  • We were engineering before we knew what the word meant
  • We were problem-solving every time a wall collapsed
  • We were collaborating when we built with friends
  • We were storytelling when we turned it into a ship, a cave, a kingdom

All that “just playing”? It was actually building the foundation for creativity, resilience, and independent thinking.

And Kids Today? They Need It Too

We live in a different world now. Kids have access to more entertainment than ever before—and most of it is passive. It’s designed to be consumed, not created.

That’s why we started Kidz Forts. Because we believe that the magic of building something with your own hands — of having a space that’s entirely yours — is something every child deserves to experience.

Not just for fun (though it’s definitely that). But because the kids who build forts become the adults who build things that matter.

So, What Was Yours?

We’d love to know — what was your favorite toy or memory from childhood? Drop it in the comments. And if forts were your thing too, maybe it’s time to pass that magic on.

🏠 Kidz Forts — Built for imagination. Built for childhood. Built to last.
